We, the students of Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, stand in complete solidarity with our fellow students and peaceful protesters in Bangladesh. The current deplorable situation requires immediate international attention and action.

Protest, brutal suppression, and attack on unarmed students and civilians:

A few weeks ago, students launched a peaceful protest against the reinstated 30% quota for government jobs reserved for the children of independence war veterans, demanding fairer quota reforms. In response, the government has resorted to extreme violence, intimidation, and direct shootings against peaceful protesters and civilians who were helping the protesters. Authorities in Bangladesh, including the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the Bangladesh Armed Forces, and police, have used unlawful lethal and less-lethal weapons, leading to hundreds of deaths.

Arbitrary arrests and detentions:

Authorities are arbitrarily arresting protesters, activists, and journalists, disrupting their work, and imposing a blanket protest ban. Recent raids and mass arrests have targeted students and opposition activists across neighborhoods.

Internet shutdown:

On July 18, authorities imposed a nationwide internet shutdown, severing the country’s global connections. The partial restoration on July 23 came too late, during a week of escalating violence and human rights abuses. Such blanket shutdowns jeopardize safety, security, and livelihoods, creating instability and eroding trust in the authorities. These incidents revealed a blatant disregard for the right to life and a serious failure by law enforcement to adhere to both domestic and international human rights obligations. We call on the Bangladeshi authorities to take immediate action to protect the rights and safety of all citizens, particularly students, by ending curfews and fully restoring internet access. We demand justice and transparency, including proper accountability for the innocent lives lost, and release those arrested for protesting. We urge the international community to recognize this as a civil rights movement, a critical struggle for democracy and justice. We grieve the loss of lives and offer our sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who have been killed or injured. Their sacrifices will be remembered, and their bravery remains a guiding light toward a more just and equitable society. Your bravery and determination serve as an inspiration, and we are committed to supporting your rights on a global platform.
